A while back I was exploring what I learned in Design school and how it can be applied to life. I have a new found desire to complete all this ideas I have been holding on to and let them finally be completed and let out in to the world - or discarded if that is their fate.

These are the 7 principals of Interior Alchemy and their relationship to the Architectre and Interior Design process.

Embrace

There is a process called PROGRAMMING where you learn everything you can about your project. How many? How much space? What do you want to accomplish? What are the requirements?  what is the deadline? Budget? Preferences?

In life this is the foundations of SELF-DISCOVERY.

Jillian Zamora (a home tour)

July 16, 2016 in inspirational interviews, spaces

Name: Jillian, Marty and Family

Location: Cairns, Queensland Australia

Size: 1134 sq. ft. ; 3 bedroom

Years lived in: 2yr; rented

Jillian and Marty have a natural talent for creating a welcoming feel, their home definitely gives you a taste of their personalities and their passions. This colourful home is laced with memories, music, and magical treasures.

A year ago, the couple had to do some major downsizing to fit into their current home which is much smaller than their last house. They successful maintained their sense of style while providing a comfortable living space for their blended family of 7. With the eldest off to university there are now 4 children living at home, as well as Shesha the cat.

Jillian is a maker with an eye for beauty. She can be found making clothes and costumes, providing beautiful henna experiences, and a multitude of other creative endeavors. Jillian is also a treasure hunter making the best finds at local op-shops (thrift stores) and garage sales. Jillian has never purchased a new piece of large furniture, all of these pieces have come secondhand. Each item in the home has a special story tell and has likely been spruced up by the hand of Jillian or Marty.

I visited the family while they were preparing for an outdoor adventure and you could see how each family member felt at ease in their space. Jillian aims to create a fealling that connects her family to the soul, but she admits that she does not feel the house is yet finished. This home is constantly evolving with school aged-children growing quickly and a few DIY projects in the works. However, from my point of view, it feels like it is just where it needs to be; full of love and treasured memories.

Jillian's Style: An eclectic mix of trash to treasure suited for a family.

Inspiration: To create feeling that connects you to your soul along with a desire to create a sense of spaciousness and balance masculine and feminine.

Challenge: Keeping it tidy with my joy of collecting.

Visitors Say: "This feels comfortable, I feel at home!"

DIY: The rug in Razi's Room made from recycled fabrics and the duchess in my room sanded back, painted and new glass handles. Marty: the marimba in the lounge made with my daughter Seneka.

Indulgence: Organic Cotton + Bamboo Sheets on the bed.

Advice: Make your space useable and comfortable. Find space for everyones belongings to fit together.  Use colours and memories to make your space feel like home.

Sources: Op-Shops, Garage sales and Freebies from friends and family.
